How can I manage the emotional impact of colitis?
Living with colitis can bring feelings that are difficult to carry, especially when others cannot see what you are going through. Acknowledging those feelings, rather than pushing them aside, can be an important part of looking after yourself.
"I spent years learning how to maintain a sense of normality at work and with friends while coping with symptoms that others didn’t always understand. I used to apologise for needing rest or for saying that a day wasn’t a good one. Even when my symptoms were mild, I felt on high alert. Being honest with friends and colleagues helped me build a safety net. Practising self‑compassion (meeting myself with kindness) was the first step."
