How can I speak up for myself when I need support?

Living with colitis often means managing things that other people cannot see. Finding ways to express what you need can make it easier to feel understood while staying true to yourself.

"I spent years learning how to maintain a sense of normality at work and with friends while coping with symptoms that others didn’t always understand. I used to apologise for needing rest or for saying that a day wasn’t a good one. Even when my symptoms were mild, I felt on high alert. Being honest with friends and colleagues helped me build a safety net. Practising self‑compassion (meeting myself with kindness) was the first step."
